The number of lumens measure the total amount of light (visible) emitted by a light source. In other words, it gauges the brightness of the light.

On the other hand, wattage measures the amount of power a light bulb consumes. 

The shift from watts to lumens as a measure of light output marked a significant step toward energy conservation.

How many lumens in a watt?

The correlation between lumens and watts varies based on bulb type, due to their different energy efficiencies.

Example watt to lumen conversion

So, how many lumens is 1,000 watts? How do you compute for LED watts to lumens? We can apply the formula above for a 1,000 watts to lumens calculation.

This means 1000 watts x 80 lumens = 80,000 lumens. This shows that a 1,000-watt LED bulb would give off around 80,000 lumens.

By comparison, a traditional incandescent bulb would only produce around 15,000 lumens while consuming the same amount of power.

Example lumen to watt conversion

To illustrate the reverse conversion process, let's consider how many watts is 800 lumens? To make this conversion, we'll follow the formula given above, but in a reverse manner. 

Firstly, remember that in the case of LED lights, Lumens = Watts x 80. Therefore, if we rearrange the equation, we find that Watts = Lumens / 80.

So, for 800 lumens, the calculation would be 800 lumens / 80 = 10 watts. The result shows that an LED bulb providing 800 lumens only consumes about 10 watts of power.

By contrast, a traditional incandescent bulb would require approximately 53 watts to become as luminous as a comparable LED bulb.
